Important Points

Fig. 176

? When bending the leg and lifting the hands, shift the body center forward, bend the left leg, turn the left toes outward, straighten the right leg, and turn in the right toes.

? When blocking up with the fists, cross the fists at the shoulder height. The right fist is on the outside and the left fist on the inside. Half bend the elbows and round the arms, lower the shoulders and let the elbows hang. Slightly arc in the chest and extend the back.

Common Mistakes

? When bending the leg, the feet do not turn enough.

? When lifting the hands, the right hand is drawn backward too much.

Fig. 177

? When drawing in the back foot and stepping forward with the right foot, the movement is not light and smooth, but rather the right foot drags or kicks off against the ground.

? The empty stance is too tense or strong, the back leg and foot do not turn outward enough.

? When blocking up with the fists, the elbows drop so that the arms are pressed against the body.

36. Tulbu Kudhu 退步跨虎(Step Back and Ride the Tiger)

36.1 Step Back and Open the Fists

Step back and to the right with the right foot; open the fists. Look at the hands. (Fig. 177)

36.2 Turn the Body and Sweep the Hands

Turn the torso to the right, shift the body center backward; move the right hand downward to the right in a curve to the side of the right hip, palm facing downward; turn the left hand to the right together with the body, and move the left hand slightly to the right in a curve, palm facing to the right. Turn the head slightly to the right, and look forward to the right. (Fig. 178)

36.3 Bring the Feet Together and Sweep the Hands

Draw in the left foot slightly backward, landing the ball of the foot in front of the right foot; turn the torso to the left, slightly lower and bend the body down; move the right hand upward in a curve, past the face and then to the left and downward in a curve, and stop it by the outside of the left leg, the palm facing outward. The eyes follow the movement of the body, look to the left at the right hand. (Fig. 179)

37.4 Lift the Leg and the Hands

Fig. 180Kick the right foot against the ground, and stand firmly on the right leg, lift the left leg forward, with the knee slightly bent, extend the foot, and turn the toes a little inward; lift the right hand forward and upward with a flick of the wrist to form a side straight openpalm hand, the wrist at the shoulder height; the left hand turns into a hook and lifts at the same time to the left, the hand at the shoulder height, the tip of the hook point- ing downward, and the torso is turned to the left. Look forward to the left. (Fig. 180)

Fig. 180

Important Points

? When turning the body and sweeping the palms, turn the body about 45 degrees to the right. When sweeping the palms, first lower the right hand in a curve, then sweep the hands across each other, the left palm facing to the right and the right palm facing downward.

? When drawing in the left foot backward, press the ball of the back foot against the ground, turn the torso to the left, and slightly lower the body center. At the same time continue to sweep the hands across each other to the outside of the left leg, the right palm facing outward and the left palm facing downward.

? Let the turning of the body lead the sweeping of the hands.

? When fixing the movement, keep the torso straight and upright, turned about 45 degrees to the left. Stand firm on the right leg, and raise the left leg forward and upward. Slightly bend the knee, keep it above the waist, extend the top of the left foot, turn the ball of the foot inward as if the left foot were coming in toward the body. The right arm and the left leg should be raised in the same direction as the “Step Forward and Seven Stars.”

Common Mistakes

? When sweeping the hands, the torso is not turned.

? At the end of the movement, the left leg and right hand are lifted forward over 30 degrees to the right.

? The right arm and the left leg are lifted in different directions.

? When lifting the right hand forward, the palm faces forward instead of sideways.

? The left leg straightens as it is lifted.

? At the end of the movement, the torso leans backward or is not straight enough.
