29.1 Turn the Body and Raise the Hand
Shift the body center backward, turn in the left toes, turn the torso to the right and backward; draw the right open-palm hand to the front of the abdomen; raise the left hand over and at the side of the left forehead. Turn the eyes with the body and look straight ahead. (Fig. 157)
29.2 Press the Palms Down in Empty Stance
Shift the body center to the left leg, lift the right foot, turn the right toes forward, and touch the ball of the foot on the ground, forming a right empty stance; relax the torso and drop it down with a slight lean of the torso forward; move the left hand downward from above and stop it down over the front of the right knee, fingertips pointing to the right; push the right palm downward by the side of the right hip, fingertips pointing forward. Look forward and downward. (Fig. 158)
Important Points
? When turning the body, make sure the left foot is turned inside enough; tum the right heel inside and lift the right foot and step slightly to the right to form a right empty stance.
? When pushing the palms downward, turn the waist and move the shoulder in the same direction, bend the legs and drop the hips. Lean the torso forward 30 degrees to 45 degrees. Keep the body straight. Press the hands down in front of the body.
Common Mistakes
? When turning the feet, the left toes are not turned in enough, or the right foot is not moved. When making an empty stance, the torso is not kept straight, or the legs are tensed.
? When pressing the palm downward, the torso leans forward too much, the back is hunched, the waist is bent, or the torso is rotated too much, or the hands stop on the right side of the body.
? Failing to make a distinct pressing movement with the palms, moving the hands downward in a curve to the right side of the body.
31. Fig. 159Dull Tudzhdng 独立托掌(Stand on One Leg and Lift the Hand)
Fig. 159
Press the left foot against the ground, slightly bend the left leg and stand firmly, bend the right knee and lift the right leg, dropping the toes, forming a left one-leg stance; turn the right hand and lift it to the front of the body, palm facing upward and the wrist at chest height; move the left hand to the left and upward in a curve, extend it at the side of the body, wrist at shoulder height, palm facing outward, and fingertips slanted upward. Look at the right hand. (Fig. 159)
Important Points
? Before lifting the right foot to stand on one leg and then lifting the hand, first rotate the waist and kick the left leg to lift the body center. Start the movement from the waist and supporting leg and send it to the hands and right foot, until the movement extends throughout the whole body.
? At the end of the movement, extend the front arm, and keep the left arm at the side, curved and extended, keep the torso straight, lift the head, drop the shoulders, slightly arc in the chest and round the back, relax the waist and lift the right leg, keep the supporting leg stable, and press the toes against the ground.
? Bend the left wrist and push the left palm outward, turn the web between the thumb and index finger forward, palm facing outward. Lift the right hand in front of the body, hands are at shoulder height.
Common Mistakes
? The arms are too limp and too bent, the torso is not stretched out
Fig. 160
Fig. 160
? When making a one-leg stance, the supporting leg is bent too much, the lifted leg sticks out, and the toes tilt upward.
32. M&bukdo 马步靠(Lean-In Horse Stance)
32.1 Land the Foot and Move the Hand Downward
Land the right foot in front of the body, turning the toes outward, shift the body center forward, turn the torso to the right; turn the right arm inward, turn the right palm down and move the hand downward; turn the left arm outward, move the left palm upward and to the right in a curve. Look straight ahead. (Fig. 160)
32.2 Draw In the Foot and Swing the Arm
Draw the left foot to the inside of the right foot, continue turning the torso to the right; turn the right palm upward, and move it to the right in a curve and lift it by the side of the body, hand at head level; turn the left hand into a fist, and lower it in front of the right abdomen, the palm facing downward, the thumb side of the fist inward. Look at the right palm. (Fig. 161)
32.3 Lean in Half Horse Stance
Turn the torso to the left; move the left foot one step forward to the left side; lower the left fist and sweep it to the left side of the body (Fig. 162); slightly shift the body center forward to form a half-horse stance; turn the left arm inward and press the arm with force to the left front, the thumb side of the left fist toward the body, the knuckles facing downward, in front of the left knee; bend the right hand and draw the palm in to the left arm to assist its press forward, palm facing to the left, fingers resting on the inside of the left forearm. Look to the left front. (Fig. 163)
Important Points
? When landing the right foot, bend the right leg, step forward and land the foot in front of the body, tum the torso to the right, tum the toes outward, and land the heel first.
? When sweeping the arms, move the arms in vertical circles across each other. The movement is the same as in Brush aside over the Knee in Reverse Forward Stance (Movement 6 Louxi Aobu 搂膝拗步).When the left hand moves in front of the right shoulder, make a fist, the palm downward, its thumb side facing into the body.
? The direction of the advance of the left foot is 45 degrees left of the front. Land the heel fist and at the same time shift the body center forward and then land the whole foot to form a half horse stance.
? When leaning forward, generate the power from the waist and legs, the strength is in the lower abdomen, the whole movement is fast and integrated, and the breath is sharply exhaled. Bend the legs and squat, pull the thighs outward, slightly lower the body center, tum the rear leg inward and kick against the ground, slightly bend the left leg. Slightly tum the torso to the left, the direction of the lean is forward on the diagonal in the same direction as the left foot. Tum in the left arm and slightly bend it, put the left fist over or to the inside of the left knee, the knuckles downward, and the palm of the fist inward. The power is always on the outside of the left upper arm.
Common Mistakes
? At the beginning of the movement, when landing the right foot, the right hand is not turned and moved downward; or the right hand is moved to the left and downward in a circular motion, or the shape of the hand is not precise enough.
? The power is not generated through the waist and legs.
? The arms are too bent when they sweep, sending the power into the elbow.
? The press to the side is made in either horse stance or bow stance.
? When pressing, the torso leans forward too much.
