17.5 Turn the Body and Move the Foot
Move the left foot slightly to the left, and turn the body to the left. At the same time, turn the left swordfingers in and draw an arc to the left. Look ahead. (Fig. 60)
Important Point
When moving the left foot, turn the toes to the front.
17.6 Stand Upright with Feet Together and Stab with Flat Sword
Move the right foot next to the left foot. At the
Fig. 61same time hold the sword in the right hand, turn the hand out and jab forward with a flat sword from the waist. Pull back the left sword-fingers, turn the hand over and change it into an open-palm hand passing the waist to hold it under the right hand, both palms facing upward. Look straight ahead. (Fig. 61)
Fig. 61
Important Points
? When holding the sword, keep the left hand in the form of sword fingers.
? Be coordinated and consistent in stabbing and standing upright with feet together. After stabbing out the sword, bend the arms slightly, and relax and lower the shoulders.
Common Mistakes
? When stabbing, the sword is not stabbed from the waist, but rather is swung in an arc from the side of the body to the front, as in holding the sword with both hands (pengjian 捧剑).
? The body is stiff, the chest is intentionally thrust out, the abdomen is drawn in or the torso leans forward.
? The right hand is not turned up, and the sword is held on the vertical to stab.

18.1 Turn the Body and Make a Circle with the Sword
Turn the right toes out, turn and lift the left heel out, turn the body to the right and bend both legs. Hold the sword in the right hand, turn the palm out and circle upward and rightward from the front with the turn of the body. Change the left hand to sword-fingers and place them on the right wrist so that they circle along with the right hand. Look to the right rear. (Fig. 62)
Important Point
When turning the body, lift the left heel after shifting the body center onto the right leg.
18.2 Step Forward and Circle the Sword
Move the left foot forward to the left front, heel first. Hold the sword in the right hand and continue to circle
back. Turn the left sword-fingers and pull back before the abdomen. Look to the right rear. (Fig. 63)
Important Points
When circling the sword, the sword handle goes first, then the waist turns, the arm swings, and the sword is held close to the body as it makes a vertical circle.
Common Mistakes
? The left foot steps directly forward (It should be 30 degrees toward the Northeast).
? The head and the waist bend.
? When circling the sword, the sword is too far away from the body, or the sword tip touches the ground.
18.3 Bow Stance and Block
Turn the body to the left, shift the body center forward, forming a left bow stance. At the same time, hold the sword in the right hand, block and intercept from the right rear downward then to the upper left front, with the strength in the edge of the sword which is held at head level, the tip slightly lower. Turn the right arm outward with the palm slanted in. At the same time, circle the left sword-fingers to the upper left and hold them above the left forehead. Look at the sword tip. (Fig. 64)
Important Points
? To block (Idn 拦)means to block upward with the bottom edge of the sword held backhand from below to the upper front, with the power in the blade edge. When blocking in this movement, turn the body to the left or the right with the sword close to the right side of the body drawing a complete vertical circle. Be careful not to touch the ground with the sword tip and also do not have the sword too far away from the body.
? At the end of the block, the right hand is in front of the left forehead, with the
sword tip near the central line.
Common Mistakes
? The direction of the bow stance is not correct; the width between the two feet is too narrow.
? The torso is not upright, the body leans to one side, and the hips are twisted. The body is not extended, relaxed or agile.
? Blocking up with the sword in the right hand, circling the left sword-fingers, and bending the left leg forward are not coordinated in a synchronized movement.
