Also known as Tiaolidn Sh'i 挑帘势(Lift the Curtain)

24.4 Back-Cross Step and Make a Circle with the Sword

Step back to the left with the right foot crossing behind the left foot, land the ball of

the foot, and bend both legs into a half squat. At the same time, turn the right hand holding the sword out, make a circle in front of the body from the right upward and to the left, lower the handle to the left side of the waist, palm in, and place the sword to the left of the body with the tip pointing on a slant to the upper left. Place the left sword-fingers on the right wrist so that they circle along with the right hand. Look at the sword tip. (Fig. 83)

Important Points

Make the circle with the sword while executing a back-cross step to the left. Keep the torso upright, and turn it slightly to the left.

Fig. 84

When circling the sword, the right arm is not swung, but only the right wrist circles, like a “wrist flower” (wanhud 腕花)in which the wrist circles,

24.5 Raise the Knee and the Sword

With the feet on the axis, turn the body to the right to face due West, and then raise the left knee to form a right one-leg stance, facing West. At the same time, hold the sword in the right hand, circle in front of the body, and lift and block upward, with the sword a little higher than the head. Place the left sword-fingers on the inside of the right arm. Look straight ahead. (Figs. 84, 85)

Important Points

Fig. 85To lift (tuo 托)means to lift the sword and block from a lower to a higher position with the power in the bottom edge of the sword blade. In this movement, hold the sword loosely in the right hand, palm out, and hold the sword high above the side of the head. Keep the sword horizontal to the ground and the tip pointing forward.

Fig. 85

Common Mistakes

? In back-cross step and circling the sword, the movements are not continuous and the arms and legs are not coordinated. In lifting the knee and raising the sword, one comes first, and one comes later; that is, the movements are disjointed.

? The sword tip drops so that the sword is not parallel with the ground.

? When pivoting on the ball of the foot and turning the body, the sword tip touches the ground.

25.1 Turn the Body and Hook the Sword

pointing behind the body. Place the left swordfingers on the right wrist. Look at the sword tip. (Fig. 86)

Important Points

? To hook (gua 挂)is to hook and hang the sword back with the sword tip passing beside the body from the front to block an opponent's attack. In this movement, first bend the wrist to make the sword tip point down; swing the right arm downward and back as the body turns, with the web between the thumb and the index finger facing the rear; and then let the sword tip go first, hang the sword back close to the left side of the body, the route of the sword being a vertical circle.

? When hooking, turn the body fully, keep the torso upright and natural.

Common Mistakes

? The landing of the foot is too heavy and the distance is too far.

? When hooking, the sword is too far away from the body, or the sword tip touches the ground.

26.2 Bow Stance and Chop

Turn the body to the right. Move the right foot one step forward, and shift the body center forward to form a right bow stance. At the same time, hold the sword in the right hand, turn the wrist and hold it high to chop down to the front, with the sword horizontal to the ground at shoulder height. Reverse the left sword-fingers and circle from the left rear to the upper left of the head. Look straight ahead. (Figs. 87, 88)

Important Point

Make the direction of both the bow stance and chopping due West.

Common Mistakes

? When lifting the sword, the sword tip is raised,

? The right arm and the right leg are not in alignment.

? The turning of the body, the chopping, and circling the left sword-fingers are not completed at the same time.
