34.1 Turn the Body and Arms
Turn the torso to the right, shift the body center to the right; turn the right arm inward, bend the elbow and push it upward, put the right fist in front of the right forehead, the palm facing outward; tum the left arm inward, thread the left fist behind the left side of the body, the palm facing backward. Look straight ahead. (Fig. 169)
34.2 Turn the Body and Grab
Turn the torso to the left; tum the left toes outward, shift the body center forward; lower the right fist past the side of the body, tum the wrist and draw the fist to the waist, the palm of the fist facing upward; change the left fist into an open-palm hand, and move it forward in a curve, turning the palm to the right. Turn the head with the body, and look straight ahead. (Fig. 170)
34.3 Punch in Resting Stance
Move the right foot past the front of the left foot and land the right foot to the left of the front of the body, cross the legs and squat to form a resting stance; make a fist with the left hand, and draw it to the front of the abdomen, the palm of the fist facing downward, the web between the thumb and the index finger facing toward the body; punch with the right fist forward and downward, past over the left forearm, stopping the right fist at the abdomen level, the palm of the fist facing upward. Look at the right fist. (Fig. 171)
Important Points
? This movement evolved from the “Small Grab and Hit“ of the Chen-style Taijiquan and the movement of “Lazy Dragon Lying Across the Road“ from the combination forms of punching in Xingyiquan [a kind of Chinese martial arts based on the fighting movements of 12 different animals]. The stance is high resting stance, the step is a cross-over step, and the hand techniques involve grabbing and punching forward and downward.
? In the first movement, do not turn the torso more than 90 degrees, make fists with the hands and turn them inward, the right fist not higher than the head, and the left fist not lower than the hips.
? When grabbing, turn the left toes outward, turn the torso to the left, move the left hand in an arc to the left front of the body, turn the palm to the right, and after making a fist, turn the palm of the fist downward.
? When punching in resting stance, make a cross-over step with the right foot forward to the left side, landing the right heel first and forming a high resting stance with the legs half bent. Punch the right fist forward and downward, the palm of the fist facing upward, the fist at the abdomen level. Rest the left fist underneath the right forearm, the palm facing downward. Lean the torso slightly forward.
Common Mistakes
? The legs are not crossed tightly when making resting stance.
? When turning the body and arms, the torso is turned to the right too much, and the fists are moved too far.
? When punching, the fists are at chest level.
35. Chuanzhdng Xidshi 穿掌下势(Lower the Body and Thread the Palm- Hand)
? 5.1 Draw In the Foot and Lift the Hands
Turn the torso to the right; draw the left foot to the inside of the right foot; turn the fists into open-palm hands, turn the right arm inward, and the palm outward, the fingertips pointing to the left, lift the hand to the front of the chest; turn the left arm and left palm outward, the fingertips pointing to the left, and raise the hand to the left side of the body. Look at the left hand. (Fig. 172)
? 5.2 Step Sideways and Sweep the Hands
Turn the torso to the right; bend the right leg into a squat, and extend the left leg to the left side; move the hands upward and to the right in an arc, passing the front
of the face, to the right side of the body, turning the palms slanted downward, the fingertips pointing upward to the right, raise the right hand to the right side of the front, the palm at head level; bend the left arm and sweep the left hand to front of the right shoulder at shoulder height. Look at the right hand. (Fig. 173)
? 5.3 Crouch Stance and Thread the Hands
Bend the right leg to a full squat, straighten the left leg, and turn the torso to the left, forming a left crouch stance; revolve the hand, turning the fingertips to the left, and thread the hand past the front of the abdomen and along the inside of the left leg to the left, the left hand in front, palm facing outward, and the right hand behind the left hand, palm facing inward. Look at the left hand. (Fig. 174)
Important Points
? When drawing in the foot and lifting palms, lift the body center back to the height of a bow stance. Turn the hands sideways and lift them no higher than shoulder height, the fingertips pointing to the left.
? When sweeping the hands down, turn the torso to the right, sweep the hands to the right past the front of the body no higher than the head. When extending the left foot to the left side, land the inside of the ball of the foot first, keeping a width of one foot7s distance between the two feet.
? When threading the hands, bend the wrists and rotate the hands, turn the left palm outward and the right palm inward so that both hands have the thumb side up, all the fingertips pointing to the left as the hands thread along the inside of the left leg.
Common Mistakes
? The range of movement is too small when the hands are lifting and/or sweeping.
? When the hands begin the sweep, the torso is not turned to the right, or the eyes are not on the right hand.
? When threading the hands, the wrists and hands are not turned distinctly.
? The range of threading the hands is not long enough; or only the left hand threads out, the right hand remaining at the waist.
? When doing the crouch stance, the head is lowered, the waist is bent, the hips are lifted, or the right leg is not fully bent.
